Monday, October 9, 2011I went to see the Pontiac Lake Horses at Jackie's for the first time and was pretty shocked by what I saw. Both horses are severely underweight and have rainrot.
The bay Morgan horse has two untreated and infected wounds, one on his head and one on his neck. They were green with infection. He has rub marks on his side that appears to be old AND new. There is white hair growing in over the spot and yet also fresh rub marks right in the middle. These are not bite marks, these are marks from being reinjured multiple times. He is wormy and very thin. The chestnut is also very thin, has rainrot much worse than the bay and appears to have some kind of knee and shoulder injury. It appears that her teeth have been kicked in and will have to be surgically removed and we are worried about what her quality of life will be. |

Now that we have placed a few horses, we "integrated" the Onondaga Starvation Horses with rest of the horses.Hope is out with Missy, Lego the mini horse and Spirit, our kill pen baby and they seem to be old friends. Chase went out with the geldings and seems a bit overwhelmed but ok. Poor Chase, I truly don't think he's had exposure to anything. It's all so new to him, but he's handling it wonderfully. Once he gains some confidence, he's going to be an awesome horse.

Sunday 7:00 a.m.
Today's the day. Two of our rescues, Major and Faith will be heading to West Branch together to be family and trail horses. Major was a private rescue taken last year and Faith is the mare that was dumped at the kill pen last April to be slaughtered. She gave birth to a colt the night before they were to be trucked to Canada. She's going to bring such joy to a little girl who already loves her.
Sunday 9:00 p.m.
It was a long, crazy weekend. We successfully placed four horses, but drove all over Michigan in crappy weather to get it accomplished, over 800 miles in 48 hours.
In a BURST of inspiration while driving through hell in a rainstorm on Friday night, Mary came up with the name Chase for the Onondaga Gelding and it just stuck, so Chase it is! After 6 weeks he finally has a NAME!

LONG day yesterday, 6 hour trip took 11 hours. Thank you rain and wind. But everybody to their destinations safely, including us. Get to do it all over again tomorrow with a trip to West Branch to deliver Major and Faith to their new home. Hopefully the weather will be just a little more cooporative this time.
