It is so amazing to see how far Joey has come. He is an amazing horse and it’s unbelievable that anyone wouldn’t treasure a horse like Joey. When we rescued him, he was covered in mud, nasty scabs, rain rot, more fungal infections, you name it. He clearly had not been loved in a very long time. Joey was severely underweight, and when Dr. Monya opened up his mouth to check his teeth, it was just heart breaking..

Joey’s mouth had deteriorated due to multiple cuts and lacerations. It’s likely that he’d never received any of the dental care he needed. (When a horse’s teeth are not taken care of, they can wear unevenly and produce sharp, pointy edges that lacerate the inside of a horse’s mouth when they move their jaw). Dr. Monya felt the edges of Joey’s teeth, and two teeth had fallen right out into her hands. (Loose teeth cause major issues for horses, as they can be painful and make it very difficult for a horse to properly and comfortably chew). Joey was also diagnosed with a Grade 3 heart murmur when he was rescued which stirred up concern, but fortunately with some groceries, love, and care, it has since disappeared.

Joey has come a long way since his rescue in 2019 and rehabilitation here at Day Dreams Farm, and he has a blooming future ahead of him. But we couldn’t have done it without our willing supporters and volunteers. Thanks to you all, he is full of yummy hay and happiness every single day.

We may not have changed the world, but for Joey, we changed his.
